People Power

People Power is a broad-based, (ideally) nonviolent civic resistance that employs tactics such as boycotts, mass protests, blockades, strikes and civil disobedience to delegitimate authoritarian rulers and erode their sources of support.

Why People Power Works

Tyrants can kill 1 or 1,000 people, but very difficult for regimes to kill 10,000 or 100,000 dissidents/protestors legitimate voice of those dissatisfied with how they are governed emergence of a lasting free society is more likely with “people power”.

Requirements for Effective People Power

  • Presence of strong and cohesive non-violent civic coalitions, including local NGOs, trade unions, churches, student organizations
  • Access to information: free press, communication via TV, newspapers, internet
