Connecting International Affairs to the Local Community

Produced by the group of students at the Carry The Vision Youth Summit

  • Integrate people’s vacations at other countries with service learning opportunities
  • Nationwide campaign gathers massive number of people to recreate an experience (e.g. Uganda kids being kidnapped, so the campaign called for people to be enclosed in tight spaces to simulate “concentration camps” in 15 locations throughout California)
  • Tempering the American superiority complex by embracing the unique achievements of other countries
  • Personal experience is often an important part of making that connection; ethnicity may play a crucial role
  • Youth lack time and are stuck in the “When I Grow Up, I Will...” mentality; challenge them to take initiative yesterday!
  • Have youths prioritize their time for activities that directly impact the community.
  • Connect academic learning to issues in the real world.
  • Go to country and build homes (e.g. http://www.ancopusa.org)
  • Develop ties with strong international organizations with local chapters
  • Have a career in developing countries
  • Find common issues among all communities (e.g. global warming)
  • Marketing the cause as hip or cool
  • Family-engaged volunteerism
